A Little About Us...

Pawsitive Match Rescue is new to town! We are a not-for-profit organization based in Calgary, Alberta, run independently and made up entirely of a dedicated group of volunteers. We work very hard to save dogs in life-threatening situations and give them a second chance at life. Our second focus is then on placing these amazing animals in the right family and creating a “pawsitive match,” as we call it.

How You Can Help

We greatly appreciate any help as we are a 100% volunteer based non-profit organization.

Help can be given in the form of volunteering your time and energy with us by fostering a dog so we can save more lives, or by lending your strength to us through fundraising, advertising, managing and organizing the adoptions or the fostering, by training dogs, escorting them to and from vet clinics / the airport, taking some time to walk them at the foster ranch each week and socialize them, or whatever else your talent may be.

We are also immensely grateful for any donations that can be made. Things like:

    * kennels/crates
    * blankets and towels
    * collars and leashes
    * food and water bowls
    * dog beds
    * chew toys
    * cleaning products
    * bones and dog treats
    * monetary donations

...are all highly valuable to us.

Of course, food donations are also greatly appreciated.  We can, however, only accept sealed and non-expired donations.  Expired foods often cause upset tummies, and a handful of pooches in your home with diarrhea is not a good time!

If you have any of these that you would like to donate or if you would like to volunteer, please contact us!

Pawsitive Match is a rescue and adoption organization that operates in the Calgary area, in Alberta, Canada. We rescue many dogs from the Cabo San Lucas Humane Society, in Mexico, and many other dogs from different parts of North America. We are 100% non-profit, and we rely on the hard work of our dedicated volunteers. Our mission is to end the needless suffering of homeless dogs and help find them loving family to be a part of.

And So The Story Goes...
It all began with the efforts of two individuals with big hearts. Together, they were successful in saving over 50 dogs from Mexico and placing them into loving, permanent homes. Their efforts didn't end there. They also worked together to recruit local Mexican volunteers for help in implementing a Spay and Neuter Program, and for help to promote responsible pet ownership. Other volunteers climbed on board and as of late spring of 2007, the group expanded into a new organization: "Pawsitive Match Rescue".

We may be new to town, but our volunteers are not new to animal rescue work! Our team is comprised of resourceful, talented, experienced and dedicated individuals with the common goal of saving dogs and giving them a second chance at life.

What We Do
Pawsitive Match saves dogs facing life-threatening circumstances in Canada, the United States and Mexico.  The dogs in our program come from shelters that have no choice but to euthanize due to over-crowding or because they are shutting down.  Our dogs also come to us from local reserves and are occasionally owner-surrenders.

Pawsitive Match is also involved in an education program in Mexico, particularly in Cabo San Lucas and its surrounding areas.  Our volunteers travel to Mexico and work exhaustively to promote spaying & neutering, as well as responsible pet ownership.  We believe that abandoned and abused dogs deserve a second chance at a happy life, no matter where they come from.

Another goal of Pawsitive Match is to provide education to the public about responsible pet ownership, the importance of obedience training, spaying and neutering, and nutrition for pets.  We also provide information on a variety of topics such as stopping puppy mills, the difference between responsible breeders vs. backyard breeders, why we are opposed to breed-specific legislation, reasons to rescue a pet, and reasons to put a stop to people who keep their dogs chained up.

Our Dogs
The Pawsitive Match team has developed a system for our incoming rescue dogs; depending on the circumstances, we either place a dog at our private veterinarian-approved boarding facilities initially, or we place it directly in a private foster home.

Our “Mexicans” are adult dogs who have typically been fostered in private foster homes in Mexico or who have spent at least a month in care at an animal shelter where their health and temperaments have been assessed by a veterinarian.  Once they arrive in Canada, they are directly transported to our private boarding facilities where their health and temperaments are reassessed.  They reside there for approximately two weeks before being placed into a private foster home.

Pawsitive Match Rescue utilizes the services and expertise of local trainers and veterinarians.  We also rely on our private foster homes to provide a detailed profile of their foster dogs’ personalities.  The number of foster dogs that we allow per household is limited to assure that our adoptable dogs receive an adequate amount of love and attention to begin their rehabilitation and the process of trusting humans again.

Our Adoption Process & The Importance of a "Pawsitive Match"
Most of our rescue dogs have experienced neglect, abuse, suffering, and abandonment.  Because these dogs cannot speak for themselves or choose their families or future, we at Pawsitive Match have a huge responsibility in making that decision for them.  We ask our adopters to take into consideration that pets require a lifelong commitment.  When planning for a new pet, future life changes such as marriage, divorce, relocation, additions to the family, career changes, and allergies, must be taken into consideration.  We strive to place our dogs in permanent, loving homes,considering what they have typically been through prior to coming into rescue.

Our application screening process is thorough, although we pride ourselves on processing applications quickly and efficiently.  The process begins with the applicant filling out a questionnaire, followed by a telephone interview, veterinarian checks, and lastly, a visit to the applicant’s home.  Our adoption fees vary depending on how old the dog is, its vet care, and transportation costs.  These funds are used towards saving more lives.  All dogs are spayed or neutered and brought up-to-date on vaccinations prior to adoption, and the vet records are provided to the adopters.  Please note that our dogs are not adopted out on a “first come first served” basis; we look for the best possible “pawsitive match”.

Our organization is also unique in that we have a two week adoption “trial period”.  It is important that adopting families have this option, as our goal is to assure a rewarding and successful adoption.  It is emotionally traumatic for dogs to be transferred continuously from one home to another, so we believe it's best to cancel an adoption in the first two weeks if it's not working out, rather than later when the dog has developed a strong bond to the family.  Follow-ups are conducted on our adopted dogs periodically in their new homes to assure that we have been successful in creating a “pawsitive match”.

Pawsitive Match Rescue would like to give an extra-special THANK YOU to all of our foster families. We wouldn't be able to save lives if it weren't for you!!!
The focus of this Calgary dog adoption group is to bring a happy ending to the lives of these dogs who have typically had to endure dangerous, unhealthy, neglectful circomstances prior to being brought into the organization's program. We hope you've enjoyed reading about us, about Pawsitive Match Rescue, our organization that rescues, fosters, and adopts out dogs to the Calgary area.
